Will Someone Please Explain This to Me?

I don't understand this. When I was in school, we usually had at least 30 kids in a class. We didn't have computers, Educational TV was in it's infancy and teachers ruled the roost. Now, classes for the most part are smaller, technology has have made many classrooms high tech learning modules but a lot teachers spend more time concerned about getting sued than teaching.

We have strong teachers unions~for good or bad, the Department of Education~for good or bad and more money to spend. Other countries are producing smarter kids than we are. Why? Washington DC Schools spend more money per pupil than any other school district in the country and the schools are in shambles. Why?

Please someone with more knowledge or who remembers what schools used to be like explain why we have the most technology advanced society in the world and as a whole, we can't educate our kids? Please explain this to me.

  1. Comparing American students to same age students in other countries is like comparing apples to oranges. Remember the saying, "there are 3 kinds of lies: white lies, dammed lies and statistics. ?"...this is it.....many foreign countries pick the cream of the crop to be educated and therefore their statistics look to be stacked. We, on the other hand, educate all students regardless of handicap, or apptitude. Our students tend to be more well-rounded, educated in more than just the basics. Where do foreign students look to go to college, especially graduate school?....The US!...and our students compete quite well with foreign
students on a university level. There sheer numbers of foreign students who have stayed in the US upon university graduation also speaks volumns for our quality of life here in the US. Could it be we value quality of life and a well-rounded life for our children rather than producing automatons who are highly educated but have no life?

  3. I don't believe we HAVE so many "bad" schools....I think you could make an argument for some inner city schools being non-productive and having a higher than average drop-out rate. Many times when organizations take over those schools such as charter schools, those same students make much more progress. I think funding has alot to do with poor progress in some schools. Take Detroit for example, not alot of state aid here and property taxes are nose-diving. This is an extreme example that likely happens in other less unfortunate cities across the US. Poor performing schools can be turned around and what has happened in Harlem, NY is a good example. Accountability for teachers, students and parents alike is a step in the right direction.
